NIC's corporate office in Olathe, KS is currently seeking applicants to serve as a Linux Systems Engineer.  The Linux Systems Engineer is responsible for engineering Linux based infrastructure and operational tools, manage capacity and performance of infrastructure, and utilize or develop automation tools to work with NIC Infrastructure.   

Ideal candidates will have 4 to 6 years of experience managing Linux systems and 2 to 3 years utilizing configuration management tools to do system automation and management. They will be familiar with Enterprise Linux standards and procedures as well as an understanding of system security best practice. 

This position has high creative latitude but also requires the ability to share knowledge with the team members and the larger NIC Linux community. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build new virtual and physical Linux systems as needed.

  • Automate system deployment and maintenance tasks.

  • Patch, upgrade and replace existing systems.

  • Troubleshoot and support Linux and Solaris systems, as well as deeper troubleshooting knowledge of technologies sitting on top of them (ex. Apache, MySQL, LDAP).

  • Participate in on call rotation.

  • Incident Resolution within SLA.

  • Compile / Update detailed documentation for new/existing architecture.

  • Proactively identify/resolve problems / cleanup activities.

  • Ability to interface with customers / internal teams effectively.

  • Ability to perform and deliver activities as it relates to project work/assignment.

  • Translate business requirements to architectural requirements / design.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

  • 2-5 years of experience with Linux Operating Systems.

  • Experience administering Linux Operating Systems, specifically in a virtualized environment.

  • Experience with Puppet or similar automation/configuration management software.

  • Implementation of scrips with bash required.  Debugging experience with Python or Ruby preferred.

  • Ability to troubleshoot application stack (networking, load balancing, OS, Middleware).

  • Ability to troubleshoot, isolate, and resolve problems in a complex environment.

  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment.

  • Capable of mult-tasking is a fast paced office environment.

  • Enterprise Experience (minimum of management of 100+ server environment).
